Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko - The Pioneer of Russian Design & Constructivism

Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko was one of the most outstanding Russian masters of 'Russian Designs' and 'Constructivism.' A decorator, furniture & theater designer, printer, painter, sculptor, and photographer, Rodchenko proved himself in all these forms of media and art forms. He was born at St. Petersburg (Leningrad) on December 05, 1891. His father, Mikhail, worked as an artisan and his mother, Olga Yevdokimovna, was a laundrywoman. Rodchenko's father passed away in 1909, after which his family moved to Kazan.

There he enrolled himself at the Kazan School of Art (1910-1914) and later at the Stroganov Institute in Moscow under Nikolai Feshin and Georgii Medvedev. He created his first painting in 1915. Later on, under the guidance of Vladimir Tatlin, Rodchenko participated in the futurist exhibition at Moscow called "The Store" in 1916. By 1918, he founded the Museum of Artistic Culture. In 1920, the Bolshevik Government made him the director of the Museum Bureau and Purchasing Fund. The same year, Rodchenko started teaching at the Higher Technical-Artistic Studios and continued until 1930.

The artist mainly concentrated on the 'Futurist' and 'Cubist' art movements. Through his friendship with Tatlin & the 'Suprematist' Kazmir Malevich, Rodchenko learnt about surface textures and the use of flat geometric shapes. His inclination towards physics, math, and geometry eventually led to his scientifically creative approach. As a result, Rodchenko moved away from 'Abstract Expressionism,' completely overruling both the spiritual and the metaphysical aspects of art. Rodchenko revealed reality through his art, in order to bring about social reforms, which he thought was possible only by a scientific approach towards art. He pioneered 'Constructivist Movement' in Russia and graduated from two- dimensional surfaces to the "spatial constructions" of 3D sculptures, as in "Hanging Constructions (1920)," which also included moving parts. In 1921, Rodchenko joined the 'Productivist' group, which gave the artist ample exposure on Graphic Designing.

Inspired from 'German Dadaism,' in 1920s, he developed interest in photography. His photographs appeared in Soviet magazines like 'Lef' and 'Novyi.' He also designed photomontages for Mayakovsky's poem "About this" in 1923. Their association lasted until 1928. In 1930s, due to the change in the government policies, Rodchenko started concentrating on sports photography and the images of parades. He was considered a master of the close up photography. Rodchenko also did exemplifying works in theaters, films, typography, and advertising. Moreover, he was involved in photo reporting and worked for several magazines, such as Ogonok, Radioslushatel, Borba Klassov, and the daily Vechernaya Moskva. In March 1925, Rodchenko made his only trip to a foreign country, Paris, where he was awarded four silver medals at the exhibition.

The artist resumed painting in 1930s with 1940s witnessing his works curving towards "Abstract Expressionism." He ceased photography in 1942. As the Russians moved away from 'Abstract Art' and photography towards more conservative works, the popularity of Rodchenko slowly declined. He spent last years of his life with his wife, Varvara Stepanova, working on formal projects. Alexander Rodchenko died in Moscow, on December 3, 1956.

Bosch 1274DVS 6.6 Amp 3-Inch by 21-Inch Variable Speed In-Line Belt Sander with Cloth Dust Bag Overview

Well-executed design combined with solid, reliable performance make this Bosch belt sander a tool with noticeable performance advantages. The Bosch features a magnesium-and-plastic housing that's lightweight yet durable. The tool is nicely balanced, comfortable, and easy to operate--important features in a tool that's often used for long periods of time for removing large amounts of stock. The Bosch comes with a cast-aluminum platen--so there's none of the warping that affects stamped-steel platens--and it sands perfectly flat right out of the box. Like many of the sanders in this class, the motor on the 1274 is aligned with the belt edge to allow flush sanding into corners. The tool's only drawback is that visibility is limited when sanding into tight corners, but that's a small minus when weighed against all the pluses. The belt-changing system works well--we didn't suffer any spring pinches--and the tracking adjustment tracks the new belt quickly and keeps it in place. There's a variable-speed dial built right into the trigger switch, which makes adjusting the belt speed fast and convenient. Wood magazine tested 10 3-by-21-inch sanders and liked the 1274DVS best. We agree that it's a great tool. --Mark McDonald
