Interpreting Screw Sizes

As they always say, nothing in this world is permanent except change. This is indeed true, even when it comes to material things. For example, mobile phones are upgraded almost every month therefore, you often find yourself eyeing a new model and eventually buying it. The same thing is applicable to clothes, appliances and even tools. When you need to change something you either replace it with something new and different or something new yet identical. Take for example loosened or lost screws. When this happens, you will need to replace it with identically sized screws. If you are not used to shopping for screws then the wide assortment of these fasteners can surely confuse you and you will probably end up buying the wrong size and wrong type of screw.

For starter, understanding screw sizes may be a daunting task. If you do not have any background in carpentry, you may find yourself asking what the numbers meant.

3 Sander

First off, screw sizes may appear like this: M3-50 x 10, 1/4-20 x 5/8 or #4-40 x.5. It does not make sense until you find out what the numbers and letters stand for.

Second, the first figure is for metric threads. M stands for metric threads while the following number is the major diameter measurement of the external threads. The figures are in millimetres. The second figure is for screw sizes with major thread diameter that goes beyond #10. This measurement is in inches. The last figure stands for Unified threads, which are also measured in inches.

Third, after figuring out what the first numbers or figures meant it is time to interpret the second figure or number. The second number is the measurement of the distance between threads.

Fourth, the figure after the 'x' is the measurement of the length of the screw.

If this basic interpretation of screw sizes still confuses you then further research is recommended or you can always ask for assistance from an expert.

All sandpaper is not created equal. As a result, we love Mirka paper. The backing is beefier than other papers, and to us, that means quality. Aluminum oxide grain is the choice of most woodworkers because it's sharp, durable and, best of all, long-lasting on the higher paper grades that won't shred on the edges. This assortment is perfect for professionals, homeowners, and hobbyists because it includes everything from stock-removing 80-grit to a nice 220 finishing grit. Yes, you can spend less on other sandpapers, but you'll end up spending more in the end. This is quality. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste
